Student at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

Kaiwen Shi, 22, started studying piano with Kustov Igor when he was 12. Before that, he studied violin for 7 years and had served as concertmaster in the Weihai Youth Symphony Orchestra. He diverted to piano because of a self-consciousness awakening when he was 14, and was admitted by Weihai No. 1 High School as one of the top students in 2016. After being awarded Associate of Royal Schools of Music in 2018, he got admitted to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music for the piano performance major and composition minor in 2019, studying with Professor Evelyne Brancart. He has given a bunch of successful chamber and solo recitals including performing a self-composed prepared piano trio, “Prelude of Reminiscence”, during his bachelor years. He was commented “his heart can be heard” by Professor Brancart, and was considered to be her “most improved student”. He is now studying with Professor Ching-Yun Hu and Andre Watts.
